Lapwing Norfolk yoga group in action as part of our therapeutic provision.
The Thrive Approach
Thrive utilises a developmental model to understand young peoples’ social and emotional needs. We assess our students each term and offer a range of targeted strategies to support each student’s learning and development based on their developmental stage.
Relationships, Sex & Health Education curriculum
We have a broad vocational curriculum offer which also supports our students to develop socially, emotionally and personally.
Holistic & therapeutic curriculum offer
Our education programmes are underpinned by a relational and therapeutic approach. We have written our own Therapeutic Competencies (2022) which our delivery staff aspire to model when working in a student centred way with consideration for attunement, validation, not knowing, the unconscious mind and self reflection. Lapwing’s Therapeutic Competencies are influenced by The Thrive Approach, Norfolk Steps, the Zones of Regulation, and the Nicholson (2014) TC Practitioner Competencies Framework, Published by The Consortium of Therapeutic Communities and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Sensory offer
Lapwing’s sensory offer supports students to be regulated, engaged and ready to learn. Support is individualised, informed by observation and embedded into daily practice. Lapwing is not an Occupational Therapy (OT) service and does not provide formal OT or sensory integration reports. Where appropriate, we interpret and embed existing OT recommendations and continue to advocate for specialist services.
Our Three stage approach:
Stage 1 - Sensory profiling allows us to understand and observe each student’s sensory needs enabling us to document a clear sensory profile for the student.
Stage 2 - Sensory strategies and circuits: using the sensory profile we are able to implement personalised sensory strategies that support regulation, engagement and improve readiness to learn.
Stage 3 - Transition: when strategies are effective this allows us to produce a transition report which reflects a student’s personalised sensory needs, successful strategies and any reasonable adjustments to support a successful transition beyond Lapwing.
Personal development
We take a holistic approach to all our student programmes with a big focus on personal development and experiential learning as fundamental ingredients to enable academic and/or vocational skills development and progress. We utilise a whole range of creative approaches, experiences, courses and qualifications to prioritise the development of our young people personally, socially, emotionally and culturally so they can go on and be successful.
We are accredited to deliver the following qualifications which develop confidence, teamwork, leadership and communication skills:
Trinity College Arts Award (Entry Level to Level 3)
ASDAN short courses and Personal Effectiveness Qualification (Entry Level to Level 2)
Duke of Edinburgh (Bronze) Award
AQA Unit Award scheme - a range of small awards to build confidence and a sense of achievement
